Diamonds, gold, etc. were discovered in the mountains of this area. By 1770s: gold production had fallen because of excessive mining. Economy was in a depressed state: uprising: 1788: new governor arrives with pombal reforms (refer to last lecture). Decides to implement measures that impacted miners, tax collectors, granters, merchants, and royal officials in the captaincy.
