During this time, the us underwent growth (economic influence and naval power) and european powers had colonies all over the world, which influenced the us to follow suit. The us supported anti-spanish imperialism movements, implemented propaganda that made. The us provided cuba with exports and cultural influence, cubans wanted to emulate american culture to declare their respectability while distancing themselves from spain. As us became more powerful, the emulation of the us began to become mistrust of us motives (i. e. when a naval ship exploded in havana in 1898). The us defeated the spain, took over the colonies of puerto rico and philippines.
