Chile: supporters tended to be wealthy, opponents: tended to be poor. In capital of chile: predict by neighborhood whether people in majority were supporters or opponents, in wealthier suburbs to east of city center, hear criticism of dictator on the streets. Poor neighborhoods on south and west side lived like virtual occupied territory, military supports, police presence: as time went on, support did weaken even in upper class neighborhoods. Resistance in politicized poor neighborhoods sometimes grew more bold and more important: important of large unpoliticized mass of middle went against military rule.
