Shelter: basic prerequisite for health; important social determinant of health. Social housing public, non profit, co-op housing. Regardless of any addictions or faults, providing adequate shelter to homeless people is the most important part to helping them get their life together, top priority. Once they have an address, they can have a health card & get treatments. Cheaper to house people than to fund homeless shelters & keep them on the streets. Critique: funding taken away from other services like soup kitchens to pay for housing. 1 in 5 (20%) are unable to find affordable, acceptable, safe homes. 235,000 people / year experience homelessness (10-15% are chronically homeless ) In 1 night, 35 000 on the streets/shelters; 50 000 hidden homeless . 1. 6 million at risk of losing their homes. Rents that are too high for low-income families (30% threshold) Current homes that are affordable need repairs (low-income families cannot afford that)
