HLTH 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Gastrointestinal Tract, Amylase, Digestion
Document Summary
We eat, breathe, and drink through our mouths and need to separate food to stomach and air to lungs. Diaphragm separates upper half and lower half of body, food needs to pass diaphragm. Pace of food through gi tract needs to allow reactions to occur. Water must be passed to eliminate waste but most must be retained to prevent dehydration. Enzymes digest macromolecules so cells of gi tract need to be protected. Too much liquid moves too fast. Too little paste moves too slow. Process by which food is broken down into absorbable nutrient units. When food enters the mouth (start of gi tract) Sometimes will ask 4 or 5, will specify. Flexible muscular tube from mouth to anus where digestion/absorption occur. Makes food into a ball so it can be propelled back. If food is scattered in mouth, can"t swallow. Protects teeth and lining of mouth and esophagus. Helps keep mouth clean by flushing away food residue.
