MUSC 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Half Note, Homophony, Monophony
Document Summary
Difficult to qualify beauty objectively: an art of sound in time which expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and colour . The example of the chickadee, doesn"t necessarily express ideas and emotions. You"d still hear your heartbeat and bodily functions. Music is composed of patterns of sound acceptable to the people of some subculture . You might not hear something as beautiful, but someone else does. Beethoven isn"t music to sub-saharan africans because it doesn"t have dance. As you repeatedly listen to music, your brain picks up patterns and makes sense of it all. Timbre- the texture" or touch" of the sound. Range- from highest to lowest note that an instrument (including voice) can perform. Leger/ledger lines- lines above or below a particular staff. Dynamics- loudness or softness of a sound (p. 21 lists them) Bass p, piano, soft f, forte, loud etc.
