After writing very little from 1813-1818, his last music is difficult, polyphonic complex, and private. He studied the music of bach, handel and palestrina, and his music becomes more polyphonic. The heroic style falls away in favour of darker introspection. He even write fugues, though in a much harsher and more jagged style than baroque. Beethoven"s late music can be divided into the success and optimism represented by the ninth symphony and the agitation and sublime power represent by the grosse fuge. In the final movement of the ninth symphony, he introduces the themes used in the first three movements before dismissing them. The tenor sings, o, friends, not these sounds, before introducing the famous ode to joy theme sung by the choir.
