Beat- basic unit of musical time: beat = pulse, some beat more important than others= have heavier accents, vast majority of songs possess 4 beats - accenting pattern. Biggest accent usually on the first beat, while the third has a significantly smaller one. Measure/bar - 1 unit of a repeated pattern. Meter- two or more measures of an accented pattern. Back beat - an accent on 2nd and 4th beat of a measure. Duration: whole note = 4 beats, half note = 2, quarter note = 1 beat, 8th note, quarter rest. Meter: bottom number = which duration gets the beat, top number = how many durations.
