If ovum meets sperm fertilization in fallopian tube/oviduct. 1st 14 days: 1/more follicles in ovaries develop & mature. Remaining cells in follicle form corpus luteum/yellow body makes hormones: *progesterone prevents sloughing of endometrial wall, ensuring rich vascular network into which fertilized ovum (blastocyte) will become implanted. Specialized cell in it produce human chorionic gonadotropin stimulate corpus luteum to continue making progesterone. Day 20-24: blastocyte implant into uterus wall may cause small amount of vaginal bleeding. Specialized layer of cells around blastocyte becomes the placenta: produce progesterone to support pregnancy at 7 wks and takes over function from corpus luteum at 10wks. Placenta function: endocrine organ, produce hormones that help in growth and deve of fetus and direct changes in woman(cid:495)s body to prepare for birth and lactation.
