Surgery: art and science of treating diseases, injuries and deformities by operation and instrumentation. Diagnosis: determination of presence or extent of pathological abnormality: e. g. lymph node biopsy. Cure or repair: elimination or repair of pathological condition or repair of anatomy: e. g. appendix removal, repair bowel obstruction, e. g. fracture repair. Palliation: alleviation of symptoms w out cure: e. g. remove obstruction but can"t remove the cancer. Prevention: removal of premalignant or partial colectomy in a patient w familial adenomatous polyposis to prevent cancer: e. g. Exploration: surgical examination to determine the nature or extent of disease: e. g. laparotomy. Cosmetic improvement: repairing a burn scar or changing breast shape. Ambulatory (outpatient): usually less than 3-4hrs in post-anaesthetic care unit (pacu: may go home the same day if stable conditions. Occurs: in advance (pre-admission clinic or inpatient unit); or on day of surgery (same-day admission unit, er)
