Uc: inflammation & ulceration of colon and rectum. Cd: inflammation occur in small intestine, mouth, esophagus, stomach. - submucosa and mucosa will be affected by uc. Usually begins between 15-25 years of age (young age group- impact life! Second, smaller peak of onset between 60-80 years of age (immune not as strong previously) Appears to run in families: hypothesized genetic component. Most common symptoms of uc: abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite (anorexia), rectal bleeding, loss of body fluid and nutrients. In children: slower growth rate; fluid & electrolyte imbalance.
