To review the physical characteristics of the newborn in the 1st week of life. 1st 24 hours post-delivery: neonate adapts from intrauterine to extrauterine life the highest incidence of infant death is during the neonatal period (1st 28 days of life) First period of reactivity lasts up to 30min after birth (breastfeeding is effective during this period: newborns hr increases to 160-180 beats/min, decreases after 30min, decreases in motor activity after period. Second period of reactivity: occurs 4-8 hours after birth. Tachycardia, tachypnea, meconium (1st stool, black & tarry) passed. Increased muscle tone, changes in skin colour and mucous production. Neonatal resuscitation: assess 3 characteristics at birth: 1. term gestation, 2. crying or breathing, 3. good muscle tone. If answer to all is yes = no resuscitation (do not separate from mother); dry the baby and place skin-skin with mother, cover w dry linen to maintain temp; observe breathing, activity & colour ongoing.
