PHIL 276 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Critical Race Theory, Standpoint Theory, White Supremacy
Document Summary
The black experience has been unified rather than dispersed. The systemic oppression against blacks has been central to building of the modern world. Contingent truth: maybe true in a situation but might not be true. Black philosophy: not just an issue for black people but for everyone. People should realize that these issues transcend skin colour and are really problems against fellow humans. For example, when we see cases of police brutality against black people, other people might marginalize their responsibly by claiming, that"s a black issue, or that"s something that black people have to solve for themselves. Mills thinks this logic is alarming because we should think this issue is for everyone to solve. Mills is arguing that standpoint theory is important to learning the racial problems that exist. No other race"s identity has been linked more with oppression than blacks. Black identity has been linked to white western history.
