Tries to diagnose human during this era (1930s: what(cid:495)s been the human past and where are we going (going back centuries, living in decline. There is something happening to us: ancient thinkers. Point of existence is to accommodate to the world: not to advance the world. Relgion gods: thoughts of 1800. Now that religion is not dominant we feel homelessness in the world. Augustan: there is a hand of god that is discernable in human affairs. Job of historian is to see this: history has a plan. Before augustan: history is unchanging, cyclical structure, hagel sees this as an imperfection in philosophy. Our times are profoundly different and better than the past. Dichotomy: we innately have deep routed faith in future, we also are non-progressive (pessimist) Modern age is an age of transition: we don(cid:495)t know if this transition is good and bad, shook our confidence of progress, much like 9/11. Unavailing mood of our time: our actions are unavailing.
