ASTR 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Beach Ball, Net Force, Headache
Document Summary
Theme 4 part 2 - newton and gravity. Here we see newton in a woodcut and commemorated on the old english one pound note. Late in his career he was the master of the royal mint for a time. At the centre we see a copy of the title page of principia, the famous book in which he revolutionized our understanding of physics through the development of the laws of mechanics, the relationship between forces and motions. Newton"s objective was to develop a quantitative, which is to say mathematical and predictable, understanding of how objects move when they"re influenced by forces. Ordinarily these forces would be recognizable as a result of collisions, pushes, pulls and the like. As you may know, newton"s discoveries can be encapsulated in three laws, the first of which is a restatement of the concept of inertia, which we first met with galileo.
