Document Summary

Fast: opens the ion channels and allows the cl- or na+ to come. Slow: gtp, g protein (one body transmitter - coupled), activate second messenger pathway and alters open state of ion channels. There is a metabotropic receptor (g-protein coupled) - lots of drug work in this area. Membrane-bound enzyme interacts with receptor membrane. second messengers are sent out and there is amplified or multiple effects released. These bind and hang around for a while. It is slow because it goes through more process than the fast. Chemically gated: opening or closing chemically gated channels in the membrane to regulate the movement of particular ions into or out of the cell. The resultant is a short- lived movement of given charge carrying ions across the membrane through theses open channels. Contraction- occurs when chemically gated channels in the muscle cells open in response to binding of neurotransmitter released from the neutrons supplying the muscle.
