PHGY 214 Lecture 6: PHGY214 W8 Zhang Lecture Notes
Document Summary
Research interests; cardiac electrophysiology and ion channel biophysics and protein trafficking. How ion channels are made, regulated and expressed on the cell surface. Heart; generates blood pressure, pushing blood to circulate through system. Heart beats around 70ml of blood, translating to 5l of blood per minute. Cardiac output increases during work, but even during resting stage, the heart pumps. Main function is for : gas exchange; you will lose consciousness in 10s after the loss of blood supply to the brain. After 5 minutes, the brain cells will be damaged permanently, even after resuming blood supply: -very hard to recover, transport system; after digestion, nutrient and water will be absorbed to be distributed throughout the body. Also, the wastes of metabolism, including heat, is distributed. Immunity and defense; blood cells delivered to the site of injury to fight infection: cell communication; hormones and endocrine system. Insulin level is regulated, released through specific glands and transmitted through circulatory system.
