Role of capitalism: make profit- e. g. greater efficiencies, new technologies, innovations in production and products. Consumer interests: good deals, value for money, lots of choice: technological innovations. Role of democracy: deliberate amount the common good, and about distribution of wealth, set the rules of the game (developmental democracy) Citizenship interests: good labour laws, widely available social goods (education, health care), environmental protections, etc. The citizenship interests all tend to raise the costs of goods (raising taxes on corporations or individuals increase the cost of goods) in this tension within liberal democracy increasingly consumer interests are winning, capitalism is winning over democracy.
