POLS 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Rough Set, Cosmopolitan Democracy, The Power Elite
Document Summary
Five ways of approaching the study of power. Capitalism freedom to the market, freedom to invent and find rational ways to get things done. Force of capitalism have we become more consumers than citizens (reich"s article and this week"s assignment) When we are thinking politically we should be thinking like citizens (health of other citizens, good of the community, create a world in which the chance of violence are reduced). Role on capitalism: make profit e. g. greater efficiencies, new technologies, innovations in production and products. Role of democracy: deliberate about the common good, and about distribution of wealth, set the rules of the game (n. b. developmental democracy) Citizenship interest: good deals, value for money, lots of choice, good labour laws, widely available social goods (e. g. education, health care, environmental protections, etc. The latter all tend to raise the costs of goods. That people should be involved in governing themselves.
