Form of government that arose in the early 1920s. Hitler (1923 fascist part came to power in 1933) Derived from the term fasci meaning a bundle of rods. A singular rod can be damaged or bent, but a bundle is very strong. Symbolic of the strength of the state. Inherently power seeking, greedy/envious, exclusive (attach to people who are like us) Violence necessary, aesthetic (can get rid of outsiders, people who are weak. Power should be concentrated at the top. Rejection of liberalism and socialism individualism and equality lead to weakness (don"t think, just act) Use of the power of the masses. Leadership marked by the ability to appeal to others and direct them. Freedom as based in the state, not individualism (you will be free if you"re part of the state) The state and people are one (there"s no place for people outside of the state) Unification of country against perceived threat (internal or external)
