Sensation: physiological process that underlies transformation of the chemical, mechanical, light, and sound energy in the world into electrical activity in the brain. Perception: physiological process involved in the organization and interpretation of sensations. Each of the senses covered in the textbook has a complex transduction process. Transduction: conversion of physical energy into electrical potentials happens in sensory receptor cells, which are specialized neurons. Quantitatively: referring to amounts or quantities that can be measured objectively. Qualitatively: pertaining to some quality or characteristic other than magnitude (ex. Vision: sensing with the eyes; perception of objects in three dimensions, at a variety of distances, and with a multitude of colours and textures. Chemical senses: the senses of taste and smell together. Skin senses: senses of touch, temperature, and pain. Kinesthetic senses: sensory endings located in our internal organs, bones and joints, and muscles that convey position of muscles and limbs, and painful, neutral, and in some cases, pleasurable sensory information.
