Conformity: adjusting one"s attitudes and behaviours to coincide with a group norm: in society, we always need some conformity to function safely and effectively. Norms are often necessary for normal social interaction: however, they can also be harmful depending on the consequences of going along with the group . Normative influence: a form of social influence that leads a person to conform because he/she fears the consequences of deviating from group norms: individuals who stray from a group norm are often disliked and ridiculed. Private conformity: conformity that occurs when an individual changes behaviours and beliefs to conform to a group: this occurs when a person experiences changes in both overt behaviour and beliefs, this is the result of informational influence. Public conformity: conformity that occurs when an individual changes behaviour but not beliefs to conform to a group: this occurs when a person demonstrates superficial changes in overt behaviour only, it is the result of normative influence.
