Document Summary
Identify the major structures, their function and location. Identify the six subcortical structures, their location and function. Distinct patterns of abnormality due to damage to distinct areas (ie. area x but not area y causes a problem with function z) Imaging of certain areas activating during certain tasks. Broca"s aphasia: difficulty producing language (speaking) rather than understanding; damage to left inferior frontal gyrus. Wer(cid:374)icke"s aphasia: difficulty understanding language, but could speak (weirdly); damage to left hemisphere, but further back. Tells us functions are localized in specific brain areas. Ie. left inferior frontal gyrus is involved with generating verbs. Lesion: see how symptoms of functional loss relate to different sites of damage. Brain stimulation: electrically stimulate the brain directly, (cid:862)(cid:373)appi(cid:374)g(cid:863) the (cid:272)ortex before neurosurgery. Non-human stimulation/recording: use microelectrodes placed in different subcortical structures of animals to locate structures that drive various behaviors. Human brain stimulation and imaging techniques: ge(cid:374)erates (cid:862)(cid:373)aps(cid:863) of the human brain at work.
