Semanticity: extent to which language can use symbols to transmit meaningful messages, human language is semantic, so is sign language and braille. Defining language: socially agreed upon rule governed system of arbitrary symbols combined in different ways to communicate ideas and feelings about present time and other times or places, real or imagined. In english r and l are different phonemes but in some languages they are similar: phonological rules govern how phonemes can be combined in language, help us figure out where word boundaries occur. Levels of language analysis: recognize phonemes in the utterance.
