Semanticity: extent to which language can use symbols to transmit meaningful messages, human language is semantic, so is sign language and braille. Defining language: socially agreed upon rule governed system of arbitrary symbols combined in different ways to communicate ideas and feelings about present time and other times or places, real or imagined. Linguistics: studies rules of language, psycholinguistics studies verbal behaviour and cognition. Phonology: rules that govern the patterns of sounds used in language (which sounds are used and ho(cid:449) the(cid:455)"re (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:271)i(cid:374)ed(cid:895, phonemes basic distinctive speech sounds in language that distinguish one word from another, ex) rice sounds like lice. In english r and l are different phonemes but in some languages they are similar: phonological rules govern how phonemes can be combined in language, help us figure out where word boundaries occur. Levels of language analysis: recognize phonemes in the utterance.
