Psyc 100: week 12 lecture notes (nov 29, 2017) Language: symbols, text, listening, conversations, interpretation, speech, reading, words, sentences, communication, information, not all of language has all these elements. What makes it a language: semanticity: use of symbols to communicate meaning, generativity: communicating new ideas, use a combination of known words rather than new ones, displacement: not here and now. Baby crying, cat meowing for food, computer languages, bees dancing, etc. are all examples of language/communication: exchange of infinite ideas, linguistics: study of languages, past languages, psycholinguistics: study of language ability. Parts of language: phonemes, smallest unit of speech (ex. Ah, ow, etc. : not as as letters, sounds, study = phonology, categorical perception, some info (ex. light) perceived as points along continuum, with phonemes, no shades of grey. Race vs. lace : can feed waveforms into computer, because they are physically similar, lexical tones: has phonemic status (insight vs. incite, lexical stress: denotes emphasis, not phonemic.
