What makes it a language: semanticity: use of symbols to communicate meaning, generativity: communicating new ideas, use a combination of known words rather than new ones, displacement: not here and now. Parts of language: phonemes, smallest unit of speech (ex. Ah, ow, etc. : not as as letters, sounds, study = phonology, categorical perception, some info (ex. light) perceived as points along continuum, with phonemes, no shades of grey. Race vs. lace : can feed waveforms into computer, because they are physically similar, lexical tones: has phonemic status (insight vs. incite, lexical stress: denotes emphasis, not phonemic.
