PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Dopamine Agonist, Opioid, Naloxone
L-dopa
• Dopamine agonist; increases the
synthesis of dopamine - used to
treat Parkinson’s disease
Amphetamine
• Dopamine agonist
• Increases the release of dopamine
• Blocks the reuptake of dopamine
back into the presynaptic cell so
that it is more available to bind with
postsynaptic receptors
• Stimulant drug: increases
wakefulness and focus
Nicotine
• Acetylcholine agonist
• Mimics acetylcholine by attaching
to the acetylcholine binding site
Naloxone
• Opiod antagonist
• Blocks opiod receptor sites without
activating them
• Used to treat opiate overdose and
addiction to opiates like heroin
Opiods
