Memory
Memory Systems
The Atkinson-Shiffrin Model
o In the 1960s, Richard Atkinson and Richard Shiffrin constructed the
memory model that bears their name; includes 3 memory stores
o Stores: retain information in memory without using it for any specific
purpose
o Control processes: shift information from one memory store to another
o Attention: selects which information will be passed on to short-term
memory
o Encoding: the process of storing information in the long term memory
system
o Retrieval: brings information from long-term memory back into short-term
memory
o Sensory Memory
Is a memory store that accurately holds perceptual information for
a very brief amount of time
o Short-term memory
A memory store with limited capacity and duration (less than a
minute)
Chunking: organizing smaller units of information into larger, mor
meaningful units
o Long-term memory
Holds information for extended periods of time, if not permanently
