Descriptive function: norms reflect what most people do in a given situation. Injunction function: norms specify what ought to be done. Facilitating social injunction: provide simple expectations in new and familiar situations. Conformity: tendency to change behaviour and attitudes to align with those of others. Provides order and predictability: group norms, autokinetic effect: a steady light appears to move, because of the constant movement of the eye. Cognitive dissonance: when there is a discrepancy in a person"s behaviour and personal attitudes/values: compliance (i. e. , buying) that occurs when something else is given for free.
