Document Summary
Language-like things that animals do: communicating through actions. What makes it a language: semanticity using some kind of symbol that isn"t necessarily related in order to describe that thing. I. e. a picture of a carrot & the word carrot : generativity communicate new ideas. I. e. a duck-billed mustang: displacement able to discuss things that aren"t happening in the present. What about : babies have semanticity (crying in distress), no generativity (always reflects distress), no displacement (crying to get something right now, computer languages (like binary) using symbols, bees (dance) semanticity, displacement. Fails to pass generativity (nothing new in waggle dance; always refers to food somewhere in the environment) Language inspires us to make an infinite amount of ideas. Linguistics the study of languages: people take existing known languages & study their properties & rules. Psycholinguistics the study of language ability: the biology of language & the behaviour of language.
