Document Summary

Our percepions of people"s lives change whether or not we think they are mentally healthy. When we gather info to make a diagnosis, we need to look at how it relates to the symptoms. Individual"s symptoms must cause them distresses or impair the ability to funcion in their daily life. Distress or impairment must be judged by a clinician to be clinically signiicant: suiciently signiicant, marked, or substanial in intensity or duraion that the paient would beneit from professional treatment. We need to see the diference between a bad day and a bad day ruining someone"s life and paterns. Internal: driven from within sense of pride, saisfacion in a job well done, need to overcome a challenge. External: material reward, good grades, praise come from someone other than the individual. You cannot diagnose a person with a mental disorder if the sole cause of the distress/ impairment is external to them (like grieving a dead loved one, etc).
