Document Summary

Describe how the rouge test is used to reveal a sense of self. Rouge test: used to determine development of a sense of self by using a red dot on a nose of child/animal. Test subject is placed in front of a mirror and observed to see if recognition occurs. Describe findings of animal research on sense of self. Chimps first began to treat reflection like an unfamiliar chimp. After extended exposure they recognized themselves and began to use the mirror productively. Discuss how language contributes to the development of a sense of self. Development of self continues as language skills increase: 2 years: refer to selves by name/pronoun, 3-4 years: describe personal characteristics (physical traits, abilities and preferences, social relationships, psychological states) Describe the changes in the sense of self across the course of childhood and adolescence. Ability to recognize one"s self as being distinct from others is a deceptively complex cognitive skill.
