Document Summary

Motivation: a general term for phenomena that affect the nature, strength and persistence of an individual"s behaviour. Drives: reversible internal conditions that affect the nature, strength, and persistence of an individual"s behaviour. Humans, like other animals, experience different motivational states or drives. These drives are related to specific areas of the hypothalamus. Nonregulatory drives also fulfill an evolutionary purpose, but indirectly. Reproduction, safety, or cooperation are not required for our immediate survival but do promote our long-term survival and survival of our offspring. Motivational states are energizing; they direct an animal to act and direct behaviour toward a goal. Ex: hunger (an internal state) motivates eating (an external action). Motivational states help animals sustain their behaviour until they achieve their goal. Both humans and other animals have nonregulatory drives, which can be classified as follows: Safety (drives such as sleep and fear that motivate us to replenish our bodies and avoid danger)
