Introduction to statistics: populations, samples and units
Sampling unit is a single element that could be sampled
- Randomly selected
- Any particular person that could be in the sample collected
Statistical population is the group of all sampling units of interest
Sample is a random subset of the statistical population
Observation unit is what you measure something about
- The thing you take data from
Measurement variable is the scale you are measuring the data on
- The data collected

- Categorical measurement variables have no units
Descriptive statistics
- Use info from sample
- The set of tools used to describe what you have in your sample

- Process used to derive conclusions about a statistical population based on your sample
