Cocktail party effect: we can attend to only one conversation among many, but will notice critical info, examples: name, favourite sport team etc. Dichotic listening experiment: test when does cocktail party effect occur, shadowing- verbally saying what is being attended to in the one ear, suggests some info is processed to some extent, but is filtered, not interpreting unattended to message.
