PSYC 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Inattentional Blindness, Parietal Lobe, Psychological Refractory Period
Document Summary
Controlled attention: attention is a mental effort, attention is limited, what"s it for, for perception- processing of incoming info. Visual search: feature search- varies by one feature, easy to spot, conjunction search- varies by several features, harder to find. Vigilance: have to keep up effort, some things over and over still need attention, some jobs require that automaticity be avoided, ex. Inattentional blindness: we tend to think as long as our eyes are open, we are seeing, but we see very little when we"re not paying attention. Inattentional blindness- when controlled or conscious attention (focus on one thing) takes away from noticing other things happening in your environment: examples, car accidents, medical errors, magic. If 2nd stimulus comes late enough, there will be no decrement in performance: ex. Attention in the brain: damage to the right parietal lobe causes attentional neglect. Investigated attention by cuing participants either currently or incorrectly and seeing how fast they would respond.
