Information retained for a longer period of time: anything beyond 30 seconds (not in the moment) is thought to be stored in ltm. Capacity of ltm: we don"t really know, stores large amounts of information, no one knowns exact number, perhaps 1013 pieces of information, 1013 synapses in the cerebral cortex (landauer, 1986) Is a connection= number of information: common (mis)perception: Information coming in is at the expense of losing older/stored information: you forget more as you get older, but no real evidence for this- researchers don"t believe there is a finite amount of memory. What does this mean: ltm lasts a long time, possible confound, the memories that you form in your late teens-early twenties are more resilient memories than formed earlier or later. Ltm vs. stm: semantic (meaning) information, baddeley (1966, lists of words that sound similar, lists of words with similar meaning, lists with similar meanings harder to get exactly right.
