PSYC 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Joshua Foer, Shopping List, Stroop Effect
Document Summary
Imaging is sometimes more difficult if it is very vague, hard to create a mental image. Ex- if you google image purpose you will get a wide range of things=abstract. Ex-if you google a spider, you will only get spiders = concrete. Form mental images of things by using verbal and non-verbal dimensions: theory put forth by allan paivio, dual coding theory. Paivio"s dual-coding theory: each system uses little chunks of info, verbal uses logogens, non-verbal uses imagens. Systems linked: once you have mental image you can describe it to someone, you can give someone a mental image by describing it to them. Things differ in how easy they are to image: ideas are more abstract, talking about difficulty. Easily elicits a mental image even if you cannot physically interact with it. Something that is concrete usually also has very good imagery.
