Imbalance of humors: phlegm, black bile, blood, yellow bile. Supernatural theories dominate (prior to 11th century, physical illness or trauma. Treatment: prayer, waving a cause, torture, starving, holy water etc. Ect (typically for depression)- (stabilization of basic functions/mood control) maybe memory deficit/extreme response. Patients to be treated as normal as possible encourage and reinforce. Defense mechanisms: when ego loses the battle with the id and superego. Rationalization & reaction formation: reject doing what you like doing. Object relations: kids take thoughts/ideas/values from adults and integrate them be themselves. Both a theoretical perspective and a clinical technique. Carl rogers: person-centered therapy & unconditional positive regard. Pros: popular appeal/ could be used as a general approach to patients/led to studies of therapy process. Pavlov, watson(behavior done because of the consequence: finger tap on sharp piece & grab a candy and put in mouth) and classical conditioning (extinction, introspection)
