Prevalence of eating disorders is substantially increasing in the western world, where the problems appear to be culture-specific. Most cases of severe disorder are found in young, affluent, white females in competitive environments. The central characteristic of these related disorders is an overwhelming, all-encompassing drive to be thin. As many as 20% in anorexia die from disorder, with about 50% resulting from suicide: the mortality rate from eating disorders is the highest for any psychological disorder, even depression. Bulimia had a large increase between 1981-82. One of the most prevalent psychological disorders on college campuses: there has never been as much stress, anxiety, etc, until now. Attempt to compensate for binge eating and potential weight gain by engaging in purging techniques. Purging is an inefficient method to lose weight and calorie intake as vomiting reduces about 50% of the calories just consumed; laxatives and related methods little effect on weight. Bulimics show an over-concern with body shape.
