PSYC 235 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Psych, Intellectual Disability, Night Sweats
Document Summary
Macrophages: considered the body"s first line of defence - these cells surround identifiable antigens and destroy them. Lymphocytes consist of 2 groups: b and t cells. Next time you get sick, your body remembers what bacteria you had and how do deal with it. T4 cells (helper t cells) enhance the immune system response by signalling b cells to produce antibodies and by telling other t cells to destroy the antigen. Suppressor t cells suppress the production of antibodies by b cells when they are no longer needed. Too many t4 cells lead the immune system to be over reactive and contribute to it attacking the body"s normal cells rather than antigens (ie. autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis) Too many suppressor t cells make the body susceptible to invasion. Human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) directly attacks t helper cells, thereby weakening the immune system and causing aids. *** use this for the exam - memorize process.
