Document Summary
Differs from acute pain - because in acute pain you have an alarm. Ie. hit toe on coffee table and get acute pain vs. btw 3-6 months afterwards still have chronic pain: chronic - rank 7+ in a 10 pt scale. Acute pain is valuable (for survival: tells you when something is wrong, when don"t know what is causing the pain - makes distress worse. Those without acute pain response die really young (due to lack of neuron responses) Ie. a tooth ache, if goes on for too long bacteria continue invading and you can die (with acute pain, you know something is wrong and seek treatment) Pain signaling has a social function - show it with body cues (moaning, screaming, easily aggravated, etc. ) to indicate pain. Because pre-disposed to anticipate and respond based on knowledge of what would be painful. Biological aspects: gate control theory of pain.
