3. 1 intro to social cognition social cognition: the study of how people think about the social would and arrive at judgments that help them interpret the past, understand the present, and predict the future. Humans are motivated to understand their social worlds we seek to understand the causes of our own behaviour we seek to fain insight into the causes of the behaviour of others. Attribution theory: a group of theories that describe how people explain the cause of behaviour personal attributions (dispositional, internal) situational attributions (external) Why do we make attributions? if we make accurate attributions, they simplify our work by helping us to: explain the causes of behaviour and outcomes predict future behaviour. Do we really go through all this e ort to make an attribution? we are more likely to engage in these types of strategies when events are: unexpected unpleasant novel self-relevant.
