In order to help our own genes survive, likely to help others unrelated to us knowing that if we give them help in one instance, it"s more likely they"ll feel obligated to help us in the future. Indirectly increasing own chance of survival: co-operative group: if we help in-group members this ensures the strength of the group, and in turn the strength of the group increases the chance of survival for other group members. Important to remember for bystander apathy: more people present, less likely for help: notice situation. If costs of helping are high, mood might be disrupted, people in good moods might not help. If helping is easy, people in good mood more likely to help than those in neutral mood. If both confess, go to jail for 5 years. If both quiet, go to jail for 1 year.
