Document Summary
Learning and memory are two distinct but related processes that allow us to adapt to and navigate our environment. Learning = the process by which experience changes the brain. Memory = how changes are created, stored, and later reactivated. Human beings would literally be incapable of functioning without our learning and memory systems. Every activity you perform involves some element of memory whether explicit or implicit. First, we have to identify different 3 types of memory: short term memory: our moment to moment conscious thoughts and perceptions. Explicit memory=stuff you know facts (semantic), things you remember happening (events) Implicit memory=not things you can recall, unconscious memory. Amnesia represents a deficit in memory that is due to damage, disease, or psychological trauma. The type and extent of amnesia typically depends on the brain areas affected. Much of our current understanding of memory has come from studying amnesic patients. Henry molaison (h. m. ): february 26, 1926 - december 2, 2008.
