PSYC 271 Lecture 6: Anatomy (II)
Document Summary
Substantia nigra helps w/ control of voluntary movement. Periacqueductuctal gray: defensive behaviour implications (ex. freezing, hr changes); lining just around the central part; involved in analgesia (pain relieving) & defense. Cerebral aqueduct that is continuous w/ the ventricles o o o o o o. Lies almost in the center of the brain; double-lobed w/ reciprocal (there & back connections: divided up by where the connections are going to in the cortex, white fibers running through it = myelinated axons. The relay point for connections to the cerebral cortex o. Located as well by their location; all correspond to o certain/specific areas of the cortex. Thalamic sensory relay nuclei (nuclei = cell bodies densely packed together) o o. Nuclei are localized to where they project o. Possibly coordinate activity in all of the lobes of the cortex (2007 paper on mammalian thalamocortical sys article)*
