Auras migraine: migraines effect 6-10% of pop, may be caused by activation of trigeminal nerve/nucleus o. Visual 99% - slowly spreads & grows; precedes migraine by about 0-3 hrs; lasts 20-60 min; hallucination can be positive or negative. Starts off near the center of your vision that slowly grows; little blurry part; can have bright or fuzzy areas associated w/ it. Pins & needles in the extremity; followed by numbness. Can be related to sensory (numbness of mouth & tongue); difficulties communicating & talking. Video: what causes auras: cortical spreading depression. Slowly spreading electrical abnormality that moves across the visual cortex. Cells become hyper-excited, followed by period of suppression. Moves at about 3-5 mm/min; not stationary & moves across the surface. Regional blood flow drops 15-35% (that occurs after spread of depression) As depression moves across, it affects your field of view o. Auras & migraine too frequently together to be coincidence.
