Axons from this area travel down spine to motor neurons. Motor homunculus roughly corresponds to body part controlled by that area: homunculus physical mapping representation of motor sys onto the cortex; motor. Strangely, damage to parts of motor cortex do not eliminate voluntary movement mapping. Can impair it although not eliminated; thought that heavy output = movements although the surrounding areas also have output (other methods of info transfer occurring) o. Motor representation mapping of the muscles in corresponding parts in the body; ex. Parts for tongue, mouth, hands etc; amount of space each takes on the motor cortex is reflective of how necessary it is to us (how impt it is) ex. Hands are required for delicate motor movements = larger represented area in the homunculus. Homunculus was discovered during localization; figured through electrical stimulation. Old view (penfield, fritsch and hitzig) stimulating hand area makes hand move; each muscle is controlled by motor cortex o o.
