Document Summary
In any social influence situation someone is the target and someone is the source (influencer) Strength is various factors that affect the prestige/social standing of the source and target. If the source is more prestigious, the influence is more likely. Immediacy: the more immediate the target is to the source the more likely influence will occur. Could be physical distance, easier to exert influence in close proximity. Also could be psychological distances (shared closeness / social groups) Number of sources: one target and many sources makes influence far more likely. Strong, immediate, and many sources = optimal chance for social influence. The injured is the source of influence whereas the bystanders are the targets. Number of sources: only one source and many targets. Immediacy: the person is a stranger (low immediacy) Interestingly the other bystanders can also be considered sources of influence, if they are doing nothing you are compelled to do nothing as well.
