1. Introduction: What are Natural Communication Systems?
The rigor and angle of the bee dance provide information on where to find
food signals other bees to come to the food, which leads to pollination
Natural communication system means they have not been taught to do
what they do. E.g. waggle dance in bees
Coding play behaviour between dogs in the lab
Communication systems can be rather passive. e.g. the stripes on animals
such as skunks
Examples:
A. Elements of Communication:
Dog
Signal dog bark
Sender dog
Receiver mail carrier (or whoever is receiving the signal)
Poison dart Frog
Signals - Red skin
Sender - rain forest frog
Receiver - Potential predators (aposematism)

Aposematism: signal associated with the fact that it is toxic
Communication is not necessarily a behaviour, it could be appearance, coloration,
etc.
2. Communication: Influencing Behaviour
A. Example: Stickleback Fish
Male (with red underside) swims in a zig-zag path around the female
Female follows male to his nest, if she finds the dancing attractive
Female enters nest and lays eggs
Male enters nest and releases sperm
There is probably nothing referential about this dance
The male is the sender, the female is the receiver
Influencing behaviour
One animal provides the stimulus for partner’s response
B. Example: Poison Dart Frog:
The coloration is stimulus for the partner’s response
Signals predators not to eat it
3. Communication: Influencing Understanding
Sometimes a signaler has the intention of informing you of
teaching you a new concept
A. Example: Vervet Monkey Alarm Calls:
