Diseases caused by specific types of brain damage that are not result of direct trauma. Any disorder where seizures recur spontaneously: seizures- abnormal synchronous firing of neurons. Associated with impaired function at inhibitory synapses: breakdown in inhibitory communications between neurons resulting in their overexcitation. Physical symptoms of seizure- convulsions, loss of consciousness: convulsions- motor seizures involving tremors (clonic) and rigidity (tonic) Non-physical symptoms- change in thought, mood, and behaviour, epileptic auras: epileptic aura- a bad smell, specific thought, feeling of familiarity, hallucination, or tightness in chest. Partial seizure- abnormal activity in one side of brain. Generalized seizure- abnormal activity in both sides of brain. Simple- consciousness not impaired: symptoms vary according to site of epileptic.
